Pelvic pain can be a confusing and often uncomfortable condition, but it’s important to know that it is treatable. At MOVE Athletics, we work with patients every day who struggle with pelvic pain. In this blog post, we explain what pelvic pain is, the various causes, and how it can be treated with physical therapy and other traditional methods.

What is Pelvic Pain?

Pelvic pain refers to any pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen, hips, and lower back. Pelvic pain can be categorized as acute (sudden and severe) or chronic. Various things, including musculoskeletal problems, gynecological issues, and more, can cause this pain.

Causes of Pelvic Pain

There are many possible causes of pelvic pain, and it can even result from multiple conditions. Some common causes of pelvic pain can include:

  • Endometriosis: a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): an infection in the reproductive organs
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): a common disorder that affects the large intestine
  • Fibroids: a non-cancerous growth in the uterus. Fibroids can cause pelvic pain and often occur during or after pregnancy.
  • Interstitial cystitis: also known as painful bladder syndrome, this condition causes pain or discomfort in the bladder
  • Musculoskeletal problems: such as hip or sacroiliac joint pain

Common Symptoms

The symptoms of pelvic pain can vary depending on the cause. Here are some common symptoms to be aware of:

  • Aching or sharp pain in the lower abdomen, hips, or lower back
  • Painful periods
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Painful urination
  • Constipation or diarrhea

Treatment of Pelvic Pain

Many traditional treatments are available for pelvic pain, depending on the underlying cause. Some most common treatments include:

  • Medications to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet and reducing stress levels

In addition to traditional ways of treating pelvic pain, there is also pelvic floor physical therapy.

At MOVE Athletics, we focus on physical therapy and addressing the root cause of pelvic pain. Physical therapy can help to improve muscle strength and flexibility, tissue quality (your muscles and tendons), and addresses YOUR movement patterns.
