My Physical Therapist Can Help With That?!

Written by Roger St. Onge | Oct 26, 2022 4:00:00 AM

Many people come to us for physical therapy after surgery when they need help getting back to being active, they want to avoid surgery, or they have pain that just won’t go away.

Here are a few things you might not have thought to see our team of physical therapists for…

Jaw pain (TMJ)

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (often referred to as TMJ…even though it should be TMJD since everyone with a jaw has the joint…but not everyone has the dysfunction) can be a real pain! Literally….in the jaw, face, neck, and headaches!

These jaw dysfunctions can result in painful clicking, popping, and locking of the jaw. Most people’s first reaction is to talk to their dentist, but this isn’t their scope of practice, so usually, the dentist recommends now eating chewy foods for a few weeks or refers out to an Oral/ Maxillofacial surgeon, which begins the cycle of running through the medical system without help.

There are a few ways that our team of physical therapists can teach you how to take control and get out of pain without jumping through those hoops.

Headaches

Headaches that are at the base of the back of the skull, come up the back of the head, and/or are felt behind the eye are often called tension headaches. You may also hear these referred to as cervicogenic headaches. Unfortunately, many people deal with these for YEARS without any relief. Usually, by the time our physical therapists see them, they have been run through the medical system and lost hope, having seen neurologists, had injections and botox, failed physical therapy, seen multiple chiropractors, and have been prescribed a variety of medications without success.

The good news is that cervicogenic headaches can be treated by our physical therapy team, even when you’ve failed treatment by other physical therapists and doctors.

Dizziness (Vertigo)

Vertigo can stem from many causes, and the one our team of physical therapists can help with is called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is one of the most common causes of vertigo — the sudden sensation that you're spinning or that the inside of your head is spinning. BPPV causes brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. It is usually triggered by specific changes in your head's position.

This can be eliminated in as little as one physical therapy visit!
